Current Awareness/Alerting Services

Many electronic journal publishers now provide e-mail alerting services whereby registered users can automatically receive tables of contents for selected journal titles. Below is a selected list of services for keeping current with recently published literature in the Biological and Life Sciences. Most of these services are free but registration is required.

Receive the table of contents from JAMA, the Archive Journals, or news listings from American Medical News via email. This service is free but to activate your alerts you must register. BioOne is a unique aggregation of 40 high impact bioscience research journals focusing on the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. BioOne Journals Online Issue Alert is an email service notifying you when new issues are available on BioONE  for any journal you select. Registered users will receive the table of contents of your selected journal (Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology) for each issue as it is published on the web, several weeks in advance of the printed version.

Cambridge University Press provides an email alerting service for their journals for registered users. There is an Account Options Menu which allows personalization of the service. The "Journals of Interest" option can be used to select journals of interest. Table of contents information for these journals will then be e-mailed directly to you. The "Select Subject Areas" option can be used to input keywords and receive alerts when articles matching the terms are entered online.

This free notification service provides updates about new publications as well as forthcoming journal articles from Kluwer Academic Publishers, Kluwer Law International and Plenum Publishers. The service allows you to choose the kind of information you would like to receive by Subject, by Journal and/or by Book Series. Kluwer Online is an electronic journal service which gives licensed institutions electronic access to the full text of over 600 titles in the areas of business, engineering, life and materials sciences, law, philosophy, sociology, and psychology. To receive e-mail alerts for Nature (Weekly) and the monthly Nature journals, simply register at the Nature web site. Registration is free. This service allows you to receive tables of contents for Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences via email, or to be notified when new issues are published online. You will need to register to use this free service. Science Direct contains full text articles from over 1000 Elsevier Science journals in the fields of physical, medical, technical, and social sciences. There are two types of alerting services available: A Search Alert notifies you by email when new articles of interest are added to Science Direct and can be scheduled to run daily or weekly. A new issue alert sends an email when new issues of selected journals become available on Science Direct. To use the alerting service, you will need to create a personal profile. This allows you to access additional features of Science Direct like saving searches and creating a personal journal list, in addition to setting email alerts. This service will automatically send the table of contents of any Springer Journal that interests you as soon as it is retrievable via LINK. LINK is an information service created by the science publisher Springer. Subjects covered in LINK are Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, GeoSciences, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, and Economics. Synergy is an alerting service for Blackwell Science Journals. Once you register for Synergy, a personal home page is created for you which holds information on your subscription status and allows you to set up email table of contents alerts. There is no limit to the number of titles that can be included.

Wiley InterScience is the online journal service from John Wiley & Sons. Content Alerting is a service by which registered Wiley InterScience users receive free delivery of hyper linked table of contents for the most recent issue of a journal.
