Home > Inside the library

The Kirsch-Wenninger Life Sciences Research Library was named to honor Rev. Alexander Kirsch, C.S.C. and Rev. Francis J. Wenninger C.S.C., both priests and  teacher-scholars in the life sciences.  It is one of five branches that make up the University Libraries  at Notre Dame. The library  provides a working collection of over 35,000 volumes with current print subscriptions to over 430 journals and hundreds of electronic journals. The collection is primarily designed to support the curricular and research needs in the life sciences, particularly the students and faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences and researchers in the Freimann Life Science Center .

Circulation

BORROWING MATERIAL - to borrow material you must present a valid identification card at the Circulation Desk. Borrowing privileges are extended to students, staff, and faculty of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, Bethel College, and Holy Cross College. Books are loaned to undergraduates for 28 days and to graduate students for one semester. Faculty books are due every year in October. Bound periodicals are loaned to all valid users for two days. Unbound journals circulate to graduate students and faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences for use in their labs and offices for two days only. The loan period for holders of a Special Borrowers Card is similar to those granted to undergraduates.

RENEWALS - if there are no outstanding holds or recalls, books may be renewed in person or by using the electronic renewal form.

RECALLS - book loans are subject to recall after two weeks if their use is required by another borrower. A fine of $25 is assessed if material is not returned two weeks after the borrower has been notified.

SEARCHES - if a volume cannot be located and is not in circulation, a search for the book can be requested at the Circulation Desk. When the material is located the patron will be notified.

OVERDUE CHARGES - an overdue notice is sent when material is past due. If material is returned or renewed within a few days, there will be no charge. If there is no response within 10 days overdue charges will be applied. If the item is not returned within 30 days it will be considered lost and the borrower will be billed for replacement costs.

BOOK RETURNS - returned materials should be placed in the return bin on the Circulation Desk to ensure that they are properly discharged. If the library is closed, a book return box is available in the lobby of the Galvin Building outside the library entrance.
